Summary:
Using a research project that explored the college-going strategies of Black high school students and educators during the 2020-2021 school year, this case study addresses research concerns that were raised in the context of COVID-19 and the 2020 global movement in defense of Black lives. More specifically, this case study addresses two types of research concerns: everyday research concerns, such as those related to participant recruitment and data collection, and larger, complicated questions, such as the ethics of conducting research in the midst of multiple global crises. Ultimately, this case study highlights how COVID-19 and the 2020 movement for Black lives catalyzed one researcher's pursuit of a closer alignment between personal values and research methodologies and engendered the development of a generative and sustaining research practice. Readers of this case study will be challenged to consider their own ethical stances and how personal values might mis/align with research practices.
