Summary:
Forced criminality occurs when survivors of human trafficking are forced to engage in illegal activities. These survivors are often misidentified as offenders, and may be arrested and prosecuted for crimes that they were forced to commit. This can result in lifelong challenges obtaining housing and employment. Practitioners who serve human trafficking survivors may want to ask clients about forced criminality, in order to better identify and meet their needs. However, this is a sensitive and difficult issue to discuss. Clients may be reluctant to share their experiences due to concerns about stigma or possible negative consequences, such as fears that they will be reported to law enforcement. Additionally, staff and clients do not always have the same understanding of forced criminality. In this case study, we will discuss a 2023 project in which staff at the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (Cast) collaborated with expert consultants to improve our process for collecting data on forced criminality. Students will learn about the challenges of collecting and analyzing data in an applied context, strategies for asking about sensitive information, and the benefits of engaging community members in the research process.
