Summary:
This case study reports some of the essential activities and decisions that go on behind the scenes when administering diaries with research participants as part of qualitative research. I illustrate diary as a data collection method within the framework of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), from research with children whose parents have mental illness. While the case study provides several rationales for diaries within the context of IPA, I argue that the method can fit neatly with other qualitative research approaches provided reasonable methodological/theoretical justifications are provided. Throughout the case study, I present themes of thinking about your participants, being there with the children, making the diary their own, and the duration of the diary, as some core features of the "unseen" aspects of work that comes with working with diaries. The explications I offer are essential to students, readers and researchers who plan to use diaries in their work. They offer practical and useful suggestions that can easily be adapted into a variety of qualitative research approaches. It is always helpful to juxtapose diaries with traditional face-to-face interviews to enable the student or researcher to understand the possibilities and challenges offered by diaries.
