- This case study focuses on the thought process and implementation of taxonomy alignment research. Taxonomies are ways to organize concepts, ideas, or objects in a hierarchical form. Sometimes, when people have different sets of taxonomies about the same thing, they need to find a way to reconcile and merge these taxonomies. Taxonomy alignment are the approaches to help us reach a consensus on conflicting taxonomies.In this case study, I introduce an example with different renderings of the United States maps and reconcile these geographic taxonomies with a logic-based taxonomy alignment approach. I highlight the components needed to plan out taxonomy alignments, a step-by-step guide to align in action, and the computational difficulties one might encounter during the process. This logic-based approach, like other taxonomy alignment approaches, enables us to merge conflicting taxonomies and produce a merged solution(s). After reading this case study, readers will be able to compile their own alignment cases and test out the methods themselves.
