Summary:
Mainly since the 1970s, the Arctic international political region has been constructed to encompass eight countries and a much larger area than at any time previously. This study drew on Foucauldian discourse analysis, including both an archaeology to unearth existing relations and a genealogy to trace how these were formed. Thus, the study analyzed the way in which the Arctic region was conceived of (Foucauldian archaeology) and how these conceptions--mainly related to specific delineations and a focus on environmentally undisturbed areas and indigenous subsistence--had come to be formed (Foucauldian genealogy). The study also contrasts these conceptions with those in areas that were not dominant in historical discourse development processes but now have come to include Arctic region building, taking examples mostly from mainland Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The study shows that the view of the region at this time is based on historically constructed and limited conceptions that exclude many key characteristics of northern European areas.
