- Summary:
- This case study emphasizes the integration of participatory mapping and Geographic information systems within the field of Geography, to delineate the routes used by the "contrabandistas" (smugglers) to transport goods across the border of Portugal and Spain, particularly under the Dictatorial regime in Portugal and in Spain. This is part of a research conducted several years ago contributing to history and geography by mapping the old routes of cross-border smuggling to preserve the oral testimonies of smugglers from being lost in memory. We explain how a mixed method approach can produce thorough and robust results while addressing validation concerns. Interviews with mental maps and cartographic sketching of the routes used by the former smugglers was paired with a GIS multicriteria decision analysis of the factors and constraints of the territory to delineate optimized routes; then they were validated by overlaying both routes to verify deviations and overlaps. Question such as data collection with mixed methods and the importance of validation is emphasized here. This case study is helpful for advanced undergraduate and master's students to exemplify the integration of qualitative and quantitative research methods through GIS.
