Summary:
Qualitative research fundamentally differs from quantitative research in its approach, objectives, and methods employed for data collection and analysis. While qualitative research seeks to answer "how" and "what" questions, focusing on understanding meanings and contexts, quantitative research aims for generalizability and prediction. Data collection methods vary, with qualitative research employing in-depth interviews, observation, and ethnography, and quantitative research using surveys, experiments, and other numerical data. Consequently, sampling strategies also differ, with qualitative research relying on nonprobability sampling: convenience, snowball or chain, quota, purposive or judgment, and theoretical sampling. In the following guide, we explain the differences between probability and nonprobability sampling methods, describe the most frequently used nonprobability sampling techniques, clarify the factors influencing the choice of sampling strategy, and discuss how to determine an appropriate sample size in qualitative research. Finally, we address how sampling strategies impact data quality and bias, and provide guidelines for reporting sampling procedures in scientific publications. We emphasize the importance of sampling design, including sample strategy, sample size, and sample composition, and emphasize the necessity for its transparent and detailed description.
