Summary:
Perhaps no human being is free from bias or can claim complete objectivity in how they make sense of the world. A major type of bias that may affect how we conduct or consume research is confirmation bias. This guide will introduce this type of bias and highlight its role in scientific research and debates. Then it will discuss in detail an example of how confirmation bias can color data analysis and lead to invalid interpretations. It will be shown that other researchers who use a study involving these interpretations may not identify elements of bias in them and thus cite the study uncritically. These dynamics can result in a loop of confirmation bias, potentially affecting entire fields of research. These discussions reinforce the significance of a focus on confirmation bias when reviewing the literature and conducting one's own research.
