Summary:
Impact study design has been widely adopted in applied social and organizational studies, emphasizing implications for practices and policy developments. This Case Study discusses the role of local contexts in designing impact studies. By delineating a multidimensional model of the local context at the macro, institutional and organizational levels, it offers several questions and suggestions for junior researchers to consider while designing impact studies within multicultural contexts. We conducted an impact study with interventions examining internal communication practices and stakeholder engagement in a joint venture in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and collected data from 102 expatriate managers. The original design of the impact study was a randomized, controlled trial method, and the company management did not support the design after the initial communication. To continue the research, we had to revise the design and adopt an interrupted treatment design by removing comparison groups and adding repeated treatment measures. This unexpected change in research design led to further reflections on the role of the local context in which the organization is embedded. It is paramount to be aware of the influence of multiple institutional factors and organizational and research culture at different stages of research design, recruiting participants, and implementing research. We learned from this impact study to mindfully design impact studies considering the role of local contexts as a multidimensional concept.
