Summary:
First ethnographic monograph to examine the interconnections of authoritarianism and displacement from the point of view of political subjectivity. While the focus of most monographs coming out about the Arab Spring is change in political subjectivity, this book highlights continuity and as such allows us to understand the social ground on which authoritarian power holders can continue to rule after the uprisings. Through its method of examining authoritarianism as an ethnographic object that migrates to and is reproduced in two politically rather different host countries while focusing on Syrians with a variety of political experiences, this book furthers our understanding of the effects of authoritarianism by showing how it shapes subjectivity in specific ways across political perspectives. Moves beyond the narratives of submission due to fear, compliance due to cooptation or belief in the merits of the system that predominate discussions of authoritarian resilience.
