- Summary:
- The Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (Cast) provides comprehensive services to survivors of human trafficking and advocates for systemic change through policy, training and technical assistance, survivor leadership programming, and research. In fall 2023, Cast staff collaborated with researchers at Stockton University to launch the Provider Perspectives Study. This mixed-methods study included surveys (N = 112) and interviews (N = 17) with practitioners in the human trafficking, sexual violence, and domestic violence sectors. We explored participants' experiences and insights regarding issues that often connect survivors with criminal legal institutions, such as reporting victimization, experiences of criminalization, and issues related to the root causes and outcomes of victimization such as homelessness and substance use. Our primary audiences for dissemination were practitioners and survivor leaders (including individuals who were both, in that they were practitioners with lived experience of victimization). To reach these audiences, we created an interactive dashboard in Power BI and made it freely available through Cast's website. This was an effective tool for communicating findings but challenging to create in that we had to convey a great deal of information clearly and succinctly for readers with varying levels of experience and comfort engaging with data. This case study will be particularly valuable for students interested in conducting research in applied settings and disseminating findings for nonacademic professional and public audiences.
