Summary:
This case study is about women weavers in the Lake Toba region of North Sumatra, Indonesia, who are key to the continuity of the Toba Batak Ulos weaving culture. These women are the custodians of the traditional woven fabric culture, one of the most important things in the rituals of the Toba Batak Indigenous people. However, women weavers have not been properly recognized as the custodians of local cultural heritage. This study aims to identify and provide an overview of women weavers in the Lake Toba region related to the inheritance of traditional weaving as a Toba Batak cultural identity. This study uses a qualitative research method with a new ethnographic approach to obtain data from women weavers as informants by direct observation of the field and in-depth interviews. The data are then processed and described so that the research results are found to be related to the current condition of the women weavers in the Lake Toba area. From this study, readers will get an overview of research examining women and local cultural identity so that they can apply it in different places and times. Readers are also expected to gain knowledge in designing strategies for using local cultural artifacts as part of a particular community's heritage and cultural identity, thereby providing sustainable benefits and solutions to the threat of extinction of local cultural heritage.
