- Summary:
- This dataset describes how a large language model (LLM), such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, was used to extract themes based on transcriptions taken from discussion forums. Our technologist created an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience designed for use with an Oculus Quest 2 headset. Our aim was to investigate whether using VR might help to alleviate foreign language anxiety (FLA), most commonly experienced when speaking in a second language. Volunteer student participants, recruited from a pre-sessional English language program in South East Asia, delivered four two-minute presentations across two different sessions in front of virtual audiences of varying size and ethnicity. They completed pre-questionnaires and post-questionnaires that measured FLA, body ownership, social presence, focus of attention, and memory assessment. They then took part in discussion forums where semi-structured interview questions were used and responses recorded and transcribed. Thematic analysis methods were used to analyze and extract themes from the data based on the perspectives of the participants. In this dataset, we provide the collected responses and a step-by-step tutorial on how to analyze this dataset using an LLM. The dataset files are accompanied by a teaching guide and a student guide.
