Summary:
This case study describes and critiques the focus group participant recruitment method for a study of information processing and sensemaking by parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (Hart, 2024). The study uncovered eight emotion-based themes that explain how parents give meaning to and act on information they receive related to medical, educational and social concerns they have for their children. Recruiting participants for this study presented several challenges such as determining the best contacts to assist in a snowball sampling recruitment approach and implementing effective strategies to recruit enough participants for each focus group session. The successes and challenges of this study's participant recruitment method and the lessons learned provide guidance that can be used to effectively recruit participants for qualitative studies relying on the synergistic dynamics of a focus group study. The insights gained from focus group interactions can explain more fully a group's shared experiences such as the sensemaking journey all parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities go on as they navigate complex medical, educational and social systems on behalf of their children.
