Summary:
In this case study we explore how participatory action research (PAR) looks when applied to violence prevention and intervention work in communities (Breeland-Noble, Streets, & Jordan, 2024; Chevalier & Buckles, 2019). We describe how community leaders, researchers, and evaluators can collaborate and apply strategies to promote progress. Next, we discuss why PAR is appropriate for identifying and addressing community needs and how mixing quantitative and qualitative data can inform initiative activities, provide community members with data they can use for advocacy and funding and to generate new models for community progress and improvement. We include PAR practices that can assist when community members and groups have competing priorities and ethical practices for those leading PAR in communities. We share challenges encountered when codesigning research in an adaptive environment and how we overcame the challenges. We also consider the complexity of doing PAR to engage multiple perspectives, explore ontological and epistemological assumptions, and discuss the importance of establishing agreements. Finally, we share lessons learned and provide considerations for your research team in applying PAR.
