Summary:
A computer-based experimental task is a typical task that many psychology or social science students would use in the lab. The benefits of a lab-based environment are the ability to control for confounding variables such as noise and temperature and the confidence that your results are a result of your independent variables manipulation. However, the lab environment often elicits feelings of discomfort and anxiety in human subjects, particularly when the task is time-sensitive, which could force a choice between speed and accuracy. Further, there are pragmatic considerations when running a live experimental session with which participants may not be comfortable. This case study is on a previous experiment set up by an undergraduate psychology student that primarily focuses on addressing the practicalities while ensuring good adherence to scientific rigor.
