Summary:
Research in psychology can take many forms, including a range of methods, contexts, phenomenon of study, epistemological perspectives, and more. Any research project, however, can be conceived of as a narrative across time and space: the design and goals emerge from our experiences, backgrounds, and own cognition as researchers and through the process, we face questions and must make decisions that ultimately shape the way the research develops. This case study describes the narrative of a dissertation research project to highlight the prestudy contextual factors that informed the work, the decisions and challenges faced along the way, considerations to keep in mind when navigating unexpected changes, and possible ways to be transparent about these complexities in disseminating the research and to build trustworthiness with the reader. The case study research is a study of adolescent development in relation to peace across Colombia in the 2010s. The study involved multimethods employed across time, building from the researcher's lived experience and expertise as well as informal observation and relationship building in the setting. Challenges included methodological design, sample recruitment, cross-cultural considerations and questions of positionality, ethical engagement, and addressing societal changes and events that occurred during data collection. Ultimately, this example will demonstrate how focusing on coherence and coordination across a project, as well as integrative research designs, can help bolster the richness of the work and its internal and ecological validity.
