Summary:
The ethos of science consists of a range of values, worldviews, rules, frameworks, agents, and issues. One of the most influential factors affecting different dimensions of science and representing the mission and vision of such aspects pertains to how to synthesize the explosion of data in a streamlined and coherent way so that readers and end users extract sound inferences smoothly. The crossbreeding of the above-mentioned movements inspires researchers to focus on the affordances of the research synthesis family. Although the value of monomethod reviews to synthesize quantitative or qualitative studies is well documented, there exist meager practical guidelines on how to combine quantitative and qualitative reviews so that prospective researchers can see the overarching potential of research synthesis. Accordingly, the juxtaposition/integration of complex concepts (i.e., the what of research) and multidimensional methodology (i.e., the how of research), which is at the hub of mixed-methods research, brings me to apply the synthesis approach to the principles of mixed-methods research. This How-to Guide outlines the potential of mixed-methods research synthesis (MMRS) as an approach to systematically reviewing quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research in the third decade of the 21st century. This guide discusses the conceptualization and implementation of MMRS and its affordances for different fields. Students will learn how to align their research topics with the conceptualization and implementation of MMRS and in what situations they can use MMRS.
