- Summary:
- Based on experience derived from personal use of chi square in my research thesis, this case study provides an evaluation of chi square as a flexible statistical measure for test of quantitative research hypotheses. However, there are default considerations that must be noted towards the selection of relative quantitative data sets. Indeed, the flexible but delicate nature of chi square, if properly handled, can enhance cogency of research data test-interpretations and appreciation of empirical implications. Indeed, the flexibility of chi square is inherent in the test options, which include Contingency Test, Test of Independence, and Goodness-of-Fit. However, inappropriate consideration of research purpose and syntax in formulation of research hypotheses cannot be saved by the best use of computational software or statistical expertise. It is noted that empirical implications of chi square scores and relative critical values are connected to the understanding of interpretation errors Type I and II. Overall, the most critical aspects of the use of chi square are to carefully appreciate the delicate flexibility and inherent variety, know the default considerations towards selection of quantitative data sets, convincingly interpret the results, as well as cogently explain the relative empirical implications of chi square test outcomes.
