- Summary:
- Research involving individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) poses a multitude of challenges encompassing ethical and methodological aspects. This case is based on research that explores how university students with ID experience academic and social life in Indonesia's higher education. Eight students with various types of ID participated in this study. In regard to the ethical aspect, the authors underline the importance of involving people with ID as participants. Information provided by parents, peers, or professionals is helpful in order to develop a more integrative profile of the participants; however, researchers should be cognizant of the subjectivity of that information. From a methodological point of view, the article showed that modifying the interview to each individual participant by providing prompting and paraphrasing is crucial to ensure accessibility of the interviewing process, and thus, researchers need to understand the communication preference of each informant. The use of photovoice as a methodological tool also helps to enhance engagement with participants. It is important to underline that participants need to be trained on the ethical and cultural aspects of photo taking, such as ensuring privacy and consent forms.
