- Summary:
- All academic research has limitations. In this guide, I outline the importance of being transparent about the limitations of your research, both for ethical and professional responsibilities. This guide covers a variety of common research limitations, including methodological, informational, and practical limitations, using both quantitative and qualitative research examples. I discuss the difference between limitations and delimitations, as well as how these limitations impact the internal and external validity of your research. Then, I cover various tips on how to effectively communicate these limitations to your audience, such as integrating discussions of limitations in your writing beyond the limitations section. I also discuss how normative institutional and educational practices can make it difficult to communicate these limitations in your writing, such as word count and style requirements imposed by academic journals, as well as trends in university pedagogies that can bias students against the use of "hedging" language in an effort to remain "objective." Because this guide is intended for a diverse audience, examples will be drawn from a variety of fields, data types, and research methodologies, with an emphasis on empirically oriented (as opposed to theoretically oriented) research.
