- Summary:
- Adolescence is a critical period of development when individuals question their identities and envision their future selves. Given that much of this development occurs in a school setting, this study examined the link between adolescent aspirations, known as possible identities, and academic performance. While numerous studies have examined how individuals imagine their futures, most have been unable to capture changes over time. To bridge the gap, a longitudinal panel study was conducted with adolescents aged 15 and above attending urban high schools in South Africa. This article highlights the shortage of practical examples and experiences in setting up and conducting longitudinal studies. We share some of the reflections from our research to provide valuable insights and considerations for future researchers interested in conducting longitudinal studies.
