Summary:
This research methods Case Study shows how to operationally delineate content categories and units of analyses in media-communication and other related content-analysis research as well as ascertain conceptual similarities and acceptable grouping of content categories and units for intercoder validity and reliability testing. Conceptualization of content categories and units requires being circumspect. During intercoder exercises and final coding (actual coding), the content delineation guide must be handy and referred to. This is necessary because some content items are conceptually more complex to code and may require enhanced mindfulness to avoid content coding confusion. Although some content categories and units can be grouped and coded as single units, it is vital to balance such grouping because, statistically, increased content categories and respective units usually lead to higher intercoder test scores. Furthermore, it is prudent to code content items in line with the relative research questions and objectives of the study. Also, depending on the type of content data being collected, one may have to use varied ink colors to denote nuanced aspects of the content items. Generally, routine coded content data backup is seriously advised. This can be done via pictures of coded hardcopies that are backed up on external drives and in virtual clouds.
