- Summary:
- This research took place in a coastal community of Cape Peninsula, South Africa. It was concerned with how neglect from those in power, understood as structural violence, upholds injustice and inequity--this notwithstanding that the city of Cape Town acknowledged the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030 as a framework for social transformation. We chose the methodology of co-creation of knowledge to allow people living in this community to communicate their experiences through active conversations based on an ethic of listening. Trust is essential to a project designed on the co-creation of knowledge methodology, seeking deep and authentic knowledges about people's lived experiences of challenges in their daily life, especially when engaging in a high-risk community. This approach therefore benefited from the assistance of appointed coresearchers from the community who facilitated a relationship of trust with local residents. The researchers developed a step-by-step method. First, it was important to have conversations with people in a place where they felt safe and could speak openly. Second, with the help of coresearchers and having developed trust, we engaged in deeper conversations and storytelling in people's homes. Over a long period of attentive listening with participants, we gathered complex and rich accounts about the unique experiences of how living in unsafety influenced quality of life. People articulated visions for change and gave the researchers suggestions for interventions they wanted the team to offer. The research shows that the application of co-creation of knowledge has the potential to bridge the gap between researchers and those in communities.
