Summary:
With this case study, we describe our process of conducting a scoping review of the literature on empathy-building activities for pharmacy learners. Sharing our search strategy, approach to title and abstract and full-text screening, the data extraction process, and finally sharing results with a wide audience, this case study will give readers a sense of the mechanics of conducting a scoping review of the literature, as well as barriers that should be considered. We will share several challenges we faced, from pitfalls in the article screening process to roadblocks in getting it published. For example, uncertainties in criteria for inclusion necessitated a great deal of discussion and consensus-making among our group. Refining your search criteria to be very clear and anticipating uncertainties can make this experience proceed more smoothly. Even after you have successfully navigated the challenges of conducting the review itself, depending on the topic of your scoping review and the intended audience, barriers to publication can arise especially if choices of journal or publisher are very limited. We share our story to inform researchers and trainees who are contemplating a scoping review or approaching one as a beginner so they may plan ahead to mitigate some of these challenges. Though our topic was related to health professions education, these tips apply broadly to any topic you may be considering, and because the methodological approach to a scoping review is very similar to a systematic review, readers may also find it helpful in planning their systematic review.
