Summary:
English learner (EL) students are a heterogeneous group with unique needs and the challenges of acquiring a new language while also learning grade-level academic content. Math word problems pose a challenge for some EL students who are at risk for math disabilities. This study, conducted by myself and H. Lee Swanson, used a single-case research design to examine the effectiveness of a paraphrasing word-problem-solving intervention for nine EL students at risk for math disabilities. A multiple-baseline design across groups was applied. Visual analysis was conducted to determine variability, level, and trend in all phases. Additionally, Tau-U effect sizes were calculated. This Case Study discusses the practical challenges of recruiting student participants, conducting intervention research in an elementary school setting, and maintaining positive relationships with the school staff. Readers will learn about appropriate and effective uses for single-case design as well as strategies in organization and communication to promote positive research partnerships.
