Summary:
This case study presents the research process for utilizing participatory action research in recruiting participants and gathering data as part of the journey for my PhD. The project focused on adolescent girls ages 16 to 19 living in Chimanimani District in Zimbabwe who needed to make sexual and reproductive health decisions to enhance their socioeconomic status and enjoy healthy lives. In this case study, discussions between the researcher and participants revolve around the use of the participatory action research approach to facilitate critical dialogue on sexual and reproductive health decision-making. The researcher engaged readers into critical reflection on the values and limitations of participatory action research in qualitative research. The case study shows how researchers can make use of reflexivity and pragmatism to conduct a credible process of data gathering through participatory action research. This case study will help other researchers who are interested in participatory action research regarding how to carry out research that contributes to transformative change and social justice.
