- Summary:
- This Case Study examines the experiences and views of primary school students regarding fee-charging private tutoring in Kazakhstan, the largest country in Central Asia. Private tutoring is commonly known as shadow education because it runs parallel to regular schooling and mostly follows its curriculum. It does not include extracurricular classes related to culture or sports. This project employed three participatory research methods: group interviews, children's drawings, and photographs. The project found that these participatory methods had empowered children with different personalities--vocal or shy--to express their thoughts, insights, and interpretations of their experiences with tutoring, both verbally and visually. This allowed them to be active participants and experts in their own lives, minimizing power imbalances between the children and adult researchers, enriching the data collected, and promoting the validity and rigor of the study findings. The project also revealed that ethical considerations in the use of participatory research methods were crucial, ensuring that participation was voluntary and that children's rights to express their views or remain silent were respected. Although the use of participatory methods presented challenges, such as requiring additional time and skills to engage students meaningfully and addressing some students' resistance, this approach offered a strong framework for conducting inclusive and ethically sound research, leading to more comprehensive and impactful findings. Further exploration and refinement of these methods can enhance their applicability and effectiveness across different research contexts.
