- Summary:
- This dataset centers on the use of arts-based engagement ethnography (ABEE) as a methodology. We begin by sharing our positionality as qualitative researchers who identify as women with intersecting identities, impacted by our own unique immigration histories. We then describe the core tenets of ABEE as a research design, which is a form of critical and rapid ethnography. We discuss the stages of data collection and analysis, including participant artifacts, individual qualitative interviews, and planned discussion groups. We share the steps we follow to analyze this data and provide examples of at each stage. These steps include (1) pre-analysis; (2) analysis, which includes individual and group analysis; and (3) integration. Results of this analysis are summarized for one participant, Maggie, who is a newcomer young woman in Canada and has integrated into a new school system. We conclude with considerations for varied adaptions of ABEE as a means of data collection and analysis. The dataset files includes selected participant artifacts as well as excerpts from an individual qualitative interview and a planned discussion group, and it is accompanied by a teaching guide, a student guide, and a how-to guide.
