Summary:

This Case Study discusses a multiple case study based on my doctoral dissertation, which focused on a rural area of a western American state and the cross-case analysis of five gang-affiliated youths (ages 19 to 30 years) and their chosen mentors. The findings from the dissertation highlight the importance of familial relationships among this population, the impact of attentive listening, the importance of shared experiences, and supporting the mentee to get out of their hometown or current situation in order to survive. The learning outcomes of this methodologic Case Study include definitions of case study research, ethical considerations and how to minimize risks (particularly when working with vulnerable populations from historically marginalized communities), and how I validated the case study narratives with each participant to ensure that their words and experiences were accurately depicted, giving them the opportunity to redact information before it was published. This humanizing factor of data collection, write-up, and member checking created a shared space of participation for both participants and researcher and grounded my work within the community, thereby strengthening participants' trust in me to deliver an accurate representation of their life and their words.
