- Summary:
- This guide explores the use of interviews as a research method. Interviews are the foundation of qualitative research, allowing for flexible and in-depth explorations of the lived experience and perspectives of participants. The guide will consider where the interview method resides within wider research methodologies, before exploring when it is appropriate to use research interviews, how to manage resulting data, and some of the problems and pitfalls that are commonly encountered when using the method. Ways in which research interviews can be planned, executed, and analyzed will be discussed, highlighting the importance of reflexivity and methodological rigor. Though interviews produce data that is rich, meaningful, and unique, they are resource intensive and present challenges and risks that need to be addressed and mitigated, including interviewer bias and the risk of participant self-censorship. This guide explores analytical approaches for the systematic interpretation of data and explores the use of mixed-methods to triangulate the data for increased validity and trustworthiness of findings. Ethical considerations are also highlighted as a significant issue in highly interpersonal methods such as interviews. This guide concludes that interviews are a powerful tool that relies on relational abilities and which produces rich data, and therefore one which must be carefully designed, implemented, and managed. When applied with skill and care, researchers using the interview method will be able to gain deep insights into complex and multifaceted phenomena, ultimately enriching the chosen field of study.
