Case study on systematic literature review methods for flipped learning in English as a Foreign Language
Place of Publication:
London : SAGE Publications Ltd, 2025.
Summary:
This case study is derived from a systematic literature review (SLR) examining the efficacy of flipped learning in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) within higher education. It explores the methodological rigor of synthesizing qualitative and quantitative research findings to evaluate educational pedagogies. Central to this case study is the implementation of systematic review techniques coupled with content analysis to identify what is known about the effectiveness of flipped classrooms in teaching EFL-a methodological approach that presents both challenges and insights when conducting educational research. This case study demonstrates the process of conducting a SLR of 40 papers on flipped learning. The papers selected encompass peer-reviewed journal articles that specifically investigate the use of flipped learning strategies within EFL settings in higher education. These studies were selected based on their empirical nature, which includes both quantitative research, such as experimental and quasi-experimental designs, and qualitative research, such as case studies and ethnographies. This case study provides educators, curriculum developers, and researchers in the field of EFL and flipped learning with a narrative of how to navigate and implement the steps involved in such a review. By showcasing the selection, analysis, and synthesis of existing research, the case study serves as a practical example that readers can reference when planning and executing their own SLR. This hands-on approach helps illustrate the processes inherent in SLRs, thereby enhancing the readers' understanding of this research method in action.
