- Summary:
- Postgraduate students are increasingly being required to conduct a systematic review of the relevant literature as part of their dissertation. This could be a scoping review that seeks to provide a clarification of concepts and key characteristics or factors related to a research topic as contained in diverse relevant existing literature. Scoping reviews require the use of a method for a qualitative and systematic thematic analysis of the articles included in the review. This case study describes such an analytical strategy that was used in a systematic scoping review of a great number of articles reporting the perceptions of students with disability in higher education about their tertiary education experience. You will find here an account of the process of qualitative thematic synthesis used in the review: what article contents were regarded as the main data; how all data content was rigorously segmented and grouped into numerous descriptive topic categories (codes); how the coded extracts were then interpreted and developed into themes and subthemes that explained the students' relevant experience as reported in the studies reviewed. These analytical processes can be carried out by a single researcher, but in this case study were undertaken collaboratively by two researchers making use of NVivo qualitative analysis software. An account of how the process was carried out by the two researchers is followed by a consideration of the important practical issues to look out for if you intend to carry out your own systematic scoping review.
