- Summary:
- How can researchers create just geospatial representations of marginalized communities? Geospatial data--information tied to space and place--and the technologies that enable their visualization, such as Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), bear promising affordances for the dissemination of underrepresented histories. Readers of this How-to Guide may be looking to draw geospatial data from archival sources, such as newspapers, that offer a perspective on the places of significance to a community. Through processes such as geocoding, students can visualize these data on a digital map--a computer-based representation of spatial layers. However, if employed uncritically, digital mapping tools risk perpetuating preexisting power relations present in conventional archival records. The practice of countermapping addresses this issue by challenging or nuancing representations that homogenize the areas that marginalized individuals experience. The purpose of this guide is to issue a series of recommendations and reflections for researchers looking to countermap. This guide will inform the learner of strategies to combat archival biases in their data-collection process, mitigate the limitations of mapping technologies, and leverage functionalities of geospatial technologies that democratize knowledge making. The sections highlight key challenges in analyzing human and social data through geospatial technologies, such as the presence of ambiguous data and the danger of dehumanization. Then the guide explores methodologies that encourage a balance between different ways of knowing, including community-centered data collection, expanded databasing, and participatory features. Ultimately, this guide seeks to equip researchers with the tools to critically and effectively compile a geospatial representation of marginalized communities.
