- Summary:
- This case study presents an original research project that used mixed methods to develop and validate a behavioral research tool in psychology. While it is easy to apply measurements in physical sciences, it is not so in the behavioral sciences; due to the complexity and dynamism in human behavior. The consequence is difficulties in developing tools with psychometric properties. The case study is an original research project designed to develop and validate the Nigerian Citizenship Behavior (NCB) scale, using mixed methods research. Though there are many journal articles on citizenship behavior in organizations, a gap exists with regard to the use of a standardized tool to measure citizenship behavior in a country. Using qualitative research methods of systematic literature review, open-ended survey, and panel review, the NCB scale items were generated. In validating the scale, content and face validity methods were used to screen the items generated. Item analysis was quantitatively used to prune the items and increase internal consistency. Factor analysis was used to derive the factors for the new scale, leading to the development of sub-scales. The scale items were confirmed to be valid using convergent and divergent validity components of construct validity. The reliability estimate was achieved using the split-half, Spearman Brown, and Cronbach coefficient alpha. The case study presents a learning opportunity on how to manage challenges of infusing qualitative research in the development of behavioral research tools, and how to establish psychometric properties of reliability and validity using quantitative research methods. The study is profitable in applying scientific procedures for instrument development in behavioral research.
