Summary:
In an era when scientific knowledge has been in the media spotlight to help explain uncertainty in times of crises, one of the greatest challenges has been how to deal with data susceptibility to media manipulation, fabrication of results, and misbeliefs relying mistakenly on the distortion of scientific soundness. Although such concern about science quality and misleading statements has been a very present aspect in manuscript reviewing, understanding the manipulation strategies and the outreach of certain ideas being exploited and critiqued in general community and media outlets remains understudied. Of particular concern are subjective qualitative research methods relying on interpretation, for example, the observation of a specific phenomenon, the audience's perception, or content analysis in which media communication is itself the subject of the research. This guide offers some recommendations to adopt in methods involving observation, participants' perception, and media content analysis while avoiding manipulative discourses and false claims resulting from a lack of distinction between facts and analysis of collective perceptions and social behaviors. The guide begins by clarifying the rationale for understanding scientific communication and media. Then considerations on how to avoid manipulative strategies in observational studies and interviews in social sciences are discussed, followed by media content analysis.
