Summary:
Philosophical frameworks, generally referred to as paradigms or worldviews, are an important but often not explicit aspect of every research project. Closely interweaving one's chosen paradigm with every decision and step in the research process provides rigor, consistency, integrity, accountability, and validity to research endeavors. This How-to Guide introduces readers to the concept of paradigm/worldviews and the manner in which they shape the way researchers think about research questions and ideas, the approaches they take in research projects, the overall design and process of projects, and the subsequent use of the findings. The guide identifies five paradigms/worldviews and reviews their related concepts and methods. This guide is particularly interested in the transformative paradigm (sometimes referred to as the critical or alternative paradigm). Drawing on a recent example of a transformative paradigm research project, this How-to Guide shows how this paradigm underlay the research design from start to finish, including the ongoing sharing of research findings. This example demonstrates how the transformative paradigm shapes a social justice research project aimed at building more socially just and equitable ways to provide nonprofit social services while supporting the community and workers.
