Summary:
The focus of this case study is a kind of discourse analysis or radical historicism which I refer to as deconstructive nonmodernity. This is affiliated to the genealogical work of Foucault, the deconstructive work of Derrida, the laying of Geertz's thick description, and Latour's challenge to disciplinary purification. Such inter/transdisciplinary approaches offer the potential to interrogate social science concerns through traditionally humanities activity, in this case examining novels as a means to critiquing psy-science. It takes the position that novels are cultural products that are active producers of knowledge in the reader and may be a vector by which ideas about madness, distress, and so-called normality diffuse in populations. The case study argues that a careful presentation of philosophical premises is necessary to convince the otherwise social science practitioner that this kind of method holds rigor and worth. After outlining the main conceptual premises and key figures, this case study goes on to suggest practical considerations a researcher new to this kind of work will need to take account of.
