Summary:
Citations make it easier to follow a narrative or the development of a theme or argument in academic writing. They act to avoid source information becoming overly prominent and distracting in the text of a work while also providing easy access to the full details of the citation. Together citations and an accompanying reference list substantiate, justify, and provide evidence for findings and arguments. Hence, they establish academic integrity. Different disciplines and their specific needs, for example, the balance between brevity in print versus idea development, have led to the development of many different referencing styles. This reality, combined with the multiple citable media available, in particular new technologies, at first glance may make the mechanics of referencing and citation appear overly complex. Developing an understanding of the way in which a reference is constructed, its alchemy, demystifies this process. Citing sources with consistency and accuracy also helps develop awareness of plagiarism. It highlights as well that at the core of plagiarism lies denial of the role of the creator of the sources. Tools such as reference managers can help make referencing easier by automating many of the processes. However, references that are machine generated always need to be checked for accuracy by a writer who understands referencing alchemy.
