Summary:
Increasingly used in a variety of disciplines, evidence synthesis methods such as systematic reviews and meta-analysis can help researchers and practitioners identify trends and effective interventions and uncover theoretical gaps to address specific topics and issues (e.g., the effect of the gamification approach on learning outcomes). Based on a systematic review study focused on critical social media literacy (i.e., communication and educational research), this case highlights the different stages of the research project. The case provides a roadmap to support researchers conducting similar reviews by describing its main milestones and associated best practices. Using the "Inquire, Design, Execute, and Report" framework (created to facilitate the discussion of this case study), the case considers the practical and theoretical components of planning and conducting a systematic review, including the initial stages (e.g., planning), processes (e.g., development of codebooks), and procedures (e.g., literature retrieval and data extraction). After engaging with this case, learners can apply the strategies discussed to design and conduct similar evidence synthesis projects.
