- This guide is designed for learning how to use different tools to explore a dataset prior to its selection for a secondary data analysis. When accessing data from online open sources there are many different tools that you can use to preliminarily explore your data. Using such tools allows you to compare different datasets and/or variables within datasets to inform your final choice of data for your research. This guide uses the General Social Survey and the General Social Survey explorer tool. This guide will support you in learning how to: navigate and use the GSS Explorer tool to search and extract data; explore data using online visualizations; use key survey documentation, including codebooks and methodology reports, to inform your research; and search for literature related to the data using an online tool. There is a Student Guide, and a How-to Guide.
