Summary:
This How-to Guide explores the notion of a research paradigm and the related concepts of ontology, axiology, and epistemology in the design, analysis, and interpretation of research. The guide explores how each of these three concepts shape and influence a researcher's philosophical stance, informing the types of questions researchers ask, the methods they employ, and the findings they generate. We begin by exploring key queries that undergird a researcher's philosophical toolkit, encompassing, "What is reality or truth?" "What is ethical?" and "How do we know what we know?" Following this overview, we dig deeper into the joint questions of "What is a research paradigm?" and "Why do research paradigms matter?" By examining the intricate relationship between research paradigms and researcher positionality in the production of knowledge, we highlight how research paradigms have changed and evolved over time, moving from more traditional (and empirical) perspectives to more transformative (and ideal) objectives. The shifting nature of research paradigms raises critical questions regarding the purpose of research and the role of researchers within the academy (macro), in the context of a discipline or field (meso), and from the unique philosophical stance of an individual (micro). We invite researchers to critically reflect on the past, present, and future of research paradigms and to reimagine new possibilities for what it means to be a researcher, to have and to hold knowledge, and to contribute to knowledge through scholarly research.
