- Summary:
- This case study critically examines the research design employed in a rapid international team ethnography focused on vaccine hesitancy. The case study challenges the traditional notion of ethnography inscribed in the magic methodological formula, based on the 1:1:1 ratio: one researcher, one village, one year. It evaluates the advantages and limitations of conducting ethnographic research in a team setting and a rapid format within a multicultural context. I argue that the most promising aspect of conducting ethnography in a team lies not merely in the opportunity to increase the number of cases studied, through a division of labor among scholars, but in the robustness of the findings. Working in a team provides the opportunity to compare and contrast different interpretations of the phenomena observed. The case study emphasizes a dialectical reading based on the juxtaposition of diverse interpretations among the team members, in which both agreements and disagreements enhance the findings' robustness. The case study also addresses the issue of the appropriate duration for a robust ethnography, proposing a pragmatic solution that, by considering the duration and depth of the fieldwork, identifies research questions to which the empirical material can offer a plausible answer.
