Summary:

Stereotypical views and the misrepresentation of women impact how "invisible" gynecologic illnesses such as endometriosis are experienced. Endometriosis is a common and progressive gynecologic condition in which endometrial tissue is found attached to other parts of the body, responding to hormonal stimulation, and endometriosis acts in a similar way to menstrual periods-often resulting in pain and inflammation among varying other symptoms. Intent on exploring the construction of visual narratives that challenge the stereotyped understanding of women, the research and associated practice reflect the lived realities of women with this invisible illness. In interpreting my personal realities in relation to those of other women experiencing endometriosis, I regarded an autoethnographic research method as most suitable to collate rich information and guide the practical output to challenge the assumptions around this disease, bring awareness, and provide otherwise unknown information. Through analyzing the research process and autoethnographic methods employed in a study titled, "Visual narratives portraying the lived experiences of women with an invisible illness," an example in practice is provided, offering insight into how individuals or students engaged in postgraduate research might apply autoethnography as a method in their own research endeavors deriving from personal experiences and/or perspectives. This paper aims to illustrate how such a research method can be applied and why it is useful and elaborate on its functioning while offering methodic guidelines and practical approaches.
