Summary:
In this case study, readers will become familiar with what conjoint experimental methods are and consider both the promise and the pitfalls of the method for conducting social science research. The case study also reviews a wide range of practical issues in carrying out these experiments in social science research, including outcome variable measurement and subject recruitment. This case study reports on a paper published in the winter of 2021 in the journal Social Science and Medicine. Prior to publication of this paper, most social science research on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance--conducted in the early phases of the pandemic--asked the public to render judgments about their likelihood of being vaccinated without respect to specific vaccine properties (which, at the time, were not yet known). In this study, I employed methods originally developed in market research (conjoint experimentation) to offer new predictive insights into how hypothetical vaccine properties of a yet-to-be-developed COVID-19 vaccine might influence vaccine acceptance. After providing a step-by-step guide outlining how I carried out this research, the case study concludes by considering how conjoint experimental methods might be applied in service of conducting social science research at its intersection with medicine, environmental science, and other fields.
