- Summary:
- Gaining academic knowledge is essential for every member of the academic community as they need to understand and utilize that knowledge for future studies. This guide will analyze how it can be challenging for researchers to write academic papers in their native language when they are accustomed to the academic discourse of their English-language-dominant field. Specifically, it will address some difficulties they will face and why researches require a critical awareness of alternative routes to be taken to solve these problems. The issues identified as possible threats for researchers falling in this group will be addressed at terminological level and coherence level and in relation to overall language clarity while translating science in English to their native language (L1). The essence of all discussion raised in this guide is about the importance of being a keen follower of the scientific language produced not only in English but also in one's native language. I argue that attaining such bilingual scientific literacy can be mainly achieved via following academic papers in both platforms. Researchers should get used to checking academic papers published in their native language to see how concepts already established in English discourse are being expressed. Additionally, I suggest that researchers trained to use English as the academic language of their field should improve their familiarity with academic writing in their native language by seeking feedback, ideas, and advice from other researchers who are accustomed to writing in that language. This would strengthen collaboration and negotiation among their academic community and improve the use of their native language in connection with science.
