Summary:
The quality of research has vast implications for researchers, the subjects and participants whose data are being used, our fields, and society more broadly. Research is not simply an attempt to capture and reflect the world but a constructive and generative process. Ensuring quality must be integrally incorporated throughout this process. It certainly entails understanding and addressing questions of reliability and validity, which are the core elements often identified in research methods courses. Moreover, ensuring quality also requires a deeper reflection on the positionality of the investigators, the place of the work in previous literature and the field, and the implications of the work (within and outside of academia). In this Case Study, we first explore the importance of ensuring research quality and then attend to these multiple dynamics in conceptualization, design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination. In each step, we consider broad approaches as well as specific strategies and steps. We also define and discuss how to bolster reliability and multiple forms of validity (i.e., internal, external, and ecological). The goal of this Case Study is to support developing researchers with a toolkit and conceptual framework for critically analyzing the quality of research and bolstering it within their own work.
