Summary:
Within scientific inquiry, the design of any research endeavor is of vital importance. Certain aspects of a research process may become even more important when the topic being examined is "sensitive" in nature. This case will discuss various parts of a research study that examined the attitudes of campus community members toward a policy that would permit individuals to carry a concealed firearm on a university's grounds. Given the sensitive nature of the topic, it will serve as a good example of some special considerations that need to be given to the research process when collecting certain data.Data was collected using a survey that was distributed to students, faculty, and staff at a public university in the United States. Within this case, special focus will be placed upon the data collection procedures of the study. Gathering information about a sensitive topic from this population was met with several methodological and practical challenges. This was particularly true in terms of sampling and garnering participants. Readers will learn, however, that with special care and consideration, sensitive topics can be studied effectively.
