- Summary:
- This case study presents insights from the design and implementation of a mixed-method research project in the most populous West African country. The study investigated the incidence, patterns, and determinants of rape in the rural and urban communities of 12 randomly selected states of Nigeria. The quantitative and qualitative data collection took place between June and July 2022, involving 66 trained research assistants (RAs) in a cross-sectional survey and 48 trained RAs in qualitative data collection. The mixed-method approach used a methodology triangulation that consisted of four data collection methods that generated two complementary data sets. First, a structured validated questionnaire was administered to 3,024 females selected through a multistage sampling strategy, owing to unavailability of reliable sampling frame in poorly planned society. The quantitative data provided evidence on incidence, patterns, and the predictors of rape among females in rural and urban communities of Nigeria. Second, the qualitative design involved 72 focus group discussions (FGD), 72 in-depth interviews (IDI), and 48 case studies (CS) in generating contextual data on rape among purposively selected females. A few males were also interviewed to capture their perspectives on females' rape experience. Conclusively, this research project teaches how to design a study in poorly planned developing societies where reliable sampling frames are rarely available. In addition, this project presents a picture of how to facilitate community accessibility in poor societies characterized by widespread insecurity. The project also teaches the benefits of recruiting RAs from communities where actual data collection take place.
