Summary:
This case study explores the application of entity and relation extraction techniques on unstructured text data for crisis research. It is based on original research conducted across various natural crisis events, analyzing textual data such as situational reports and social media posts to construct social networks and assess collaborative efforts during crises. The case study specifically addresses methodological and practical challenges encountered in this research process.Key challenges include handling the variability in text data genres, optimizing extraction methods for domain-specific accuracy, and comparing performance across different relation extraction models. This case study applies and evaluates multiple state-of-the-art relation extraction methods: heuristics-based models, off-the-shelf rule-based methods, and word-embedding based models, among others. It also examines the impact of different parameter settings and extraction techniques on the reliability of the generated social networks. This case study will be useful for researchers and practitioners in the fields of crisis informatics, natural language processing, and social network analysis. It provides insights into selecting and fine-tuning relation extraction methods for specific applications, highlighting the trade-offs between accuracy and computational resources. Readers will learn about the empirical performance of various models, the types of errors to anticipate, and strategies for improving the reliability and accuracy of entity and relation extraction in crisis-related text.By understanding these techniques and their limitations, social science researchers and practitioners can apply natural language processing to extract meaningful information from the created networks such as key actors and essential collaborations between response agencies. Ultimately, these insights may help researchers and practitioners identify areas of strength as well as opportunities for improvement in current crisis response plans.
